En los últimos años las amenazas más grandes que han enfrentado las tortugas marinas vienen de las acciones y el impacto antrópico en las áreas esenciales para ellas. Pese a la existencia de programas y planes de acción y manejo para conservarlas, la participación de la comunidad de Isla Fuerte en estos ha sido escasa, lo que se ve reflejado en el limitado activismo para realizar las actividades consignadas en el Plan de Acción para la Conservación de Tortugas Marinas. Por esto, el propósito de esta investigación es establecer, desde la percepción de actores clave de Isla Fuerte, el estado actual de las tortugas con el fin de proponer estrategias participativas de manejo para su conservación, para contribuir al Plan de Acción para la Conservación de Tortugas Marinas en Isla Fuerte.
Mediante un enfoque cualitativo, se realizaron entrevistas y un taller participativo, en el cual se identificaron los cambios, amenazas, problemáticas y acciones de manejo y conservación asociados al recurso tortuga. Se identificó la disminución de avistamientos de tortugas a lo largo del tiempo (desde 1980 hasta hoy), donde las principales amenazas que esos ejemplares enfrenta con la captura incidental y/o dirigida, el consumo de carne y huevo, contaminación de playas y mar, deterioro de ecosistemas marino-costeros y la falta de apoyo en actividades de criaderos de tortugas. El criadero de tortugas y Festival de la Conservación de la Tortuga, junto con la implementación de actividades de monitoreo y talleres informativos, hacen parte de las acciones que buscan llevar a cabo e incorporar en el Plan de Acción. Esta investigación permitió tener una aproximación a la percepción que tienen los actores clave frente al recurso y como, mediante su participación, se pueden implementar estrategias y planes de manejo con el fin de cuidar y proteger las tortugas marinas identificadas en la isla.
Abstract
In recent years, the greatest threats sea turtles have faced come from human actions and impacts in essential areas for them. Despite the existence of programs and action and management plans to conserve them, the participation of the Isla Fuerte community in these has been scarce, which is reflected in the limited activism to carry out the activities consigned in the Action Plan for the Conservation of Sea Turtles. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to establish, from the perception of key actors of Isla Fuerte, the current state of the turtles to propose participatory management strategies for their conservation, to contribute to the Action Plan for the Conservation of Sea Turtles on Isla Fuerte.
Using a qualitative approach, interviews and a participatory workshop were conducted, in which the changes, threats, problems, and management and conservation actions associated with the turtle resource were identified. The decrease in turtle sightings over time (from 1980 to today) was identified, where the main threats that these specimens face are incidental and/or directed capture, consumption of meat and eggs, contamination of beaches and sea, deterioration of marine-coastal ecosystems and the lack of support for Head-Starting programs. The turtle hatchery (Head-Starting) and Turtle Conservation Festival, together with the implementation of monitoring activities and information workshops, are part of the actions that they seek to carry out and incorporate into the Action Plan. This research allowed us to have an approximation to the perception that the key actors have regarding the resource and how, through their participation, management strategies and plans can be implemented to protect the sea turtles identified on the island.
