Organization of artists' archives : study of the sketches of stained glass artist Walter Wolff Wasserhoven as part of the Colombian documentary heritage.

Resumen

El fondo Walter Wolff Wasserhoven está compuesto por 478 documentos iconográficos, que corresponden a dibujos o bocetos elaborados por el artista alemán Walter Wolff Wasserhoven para la fabricación de vitrales, presumiblemente entre 1932 y 1980, tiempo durante el cual residió en Colombia. En ese sentido, con el propósito de brindar posibles respuestas a los problemas que plantea la organización de fondos con documentos no textuales, se propuso adelantar un proceso de investigación aplicada para la organización de tal archivo, con énfasis en la descripción de documentos iconográficos. Se considera que dos podrían ser las contribuciones de este trabajo para los futuros procesos de organización de archivos de artistas. De una parte, resalta la importancia de identificar el contexto de producción de los documentos, a fin de analizarlos correctamente y proporcionar en sus descripciones datos certeros que permitan a los potenciales investigadores localizarlos y acceder fácilmente a ellos de acuerdo con sus intereses. De otra parte, sustentado en el análisis de la naturaleza y características de los documentos iconográficos, este trabajo proporciona lineamientos generales para el diligenciamiento de los elementos de cada una de las áreas de la norma internacional de descripción ISAD (G), cuya funcionalidad podrá ser puesta a prueba en otros fondos con características similares.

Abstract

The Walter Wolff Wasserhoven collection is composed of 478 iconographic documents, which correspond to designs made by the German artist Walter Wolff Wasserhoven for the manufacture of stained glass, presumably between 1932 and 1980, during which time he lived in Colombia. In this sense, with the purpose of providing possible answers to the problems posed by the organization of collections with non-textual documents, it was proposed to advance a process of applied research for the organization of such an archive, with emphasis on the description of iconographic documents. It is considered that this work could make two contributions to future processes of organizing artists' archives. On the one hand, it highlights the importance of identifying the context of production of the documents, in order to analyze them correctly and provide in their descriptions accurate data that allow potential researchers to locate and easily access them according to their interests. On the other hand, based on the analysis of the nature and characteristics of iconographic documents, this work provides general guidelines for the completion of the elements of each of the areas of the international standard of description ISAD (G), whose functionality can be tested in other collections with similar characteristics.
