Geomatic methods for the built heritage of Canosio valorization Redeveloping Casa Corte by proposing an emergency housingZusammenfassung
The theme of our thesis was an opportunity suggested by Team Direct DAD Polito, that aims towards the geographical and territorial survey of Valle maira, in the region of Cunese and also to analyse Casa Corte in the commune of Canosio .
The research is based on introduction to the Geomatics survey techniques, carried out by Team Direct Polito, which dealt with various instruments based on 4 main survey methods:
UAV photogrammetry, The hand held system named Zebb Revo by GeoSlam which is based on SLAM technology, LiDAR which is a laser scanner used to convert analog information digitaly and Gis, a tool that allows to analize the teritory based on geographic information
A survey was carried out with Team Direct PoliTo which aimed to analyse Valle Maira, this particular house “ Casa Corte” seemed very intriguing, based on its construction technique and its Geographical location. An in-depth 3D survey on innovative geomatics methods for Casa Corte was conducted which helped us to generate the integrated 3D representation of the current state of the building. Furthermore, On consulting the locals and the municipal authorities of Canosio, it was narrowed down on restoring and re-designing Casa Corte on the basis on various conclusions deduced with the help of the research done to explain in detail What? Why? When? Where? and How? of these different 4 methods mentioned before. So in this way we can understand better the importance of the use and the huge impact that they have had in the “regeneration” of architecture. Geomatics outcomes are useful for the global knowledge of the architectural complex and they help us to determine how practical and sustainable these methods are to valorize the cultural heritage, especially in places like Valle Maira where history has been decived in its developement, are useful.
By the use of the different geomatic methods mentioned before, and a deep analysis about the data that can be obtained from them we took it as a chance to provide a research on how this methods can help us as architects/designers to approach in the most convinient, efficient and sustainable way into a possible solution to revitalize the site which gives us an opportunity to oppose the problem of depopulation and degradation in cultural assets happening progressively since the last century according to the statistics done.
In the same time, we consider the developement of this thesis and the research done as an opportunity to recognize a social, political and economical situation carried out.
For the understanding of the possible and different options of applications of the data obtained from the geomatchis methods, we will present a research taking an example that Europe, and the entire world, is facing with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, affecting milliions of people with several problems on of which is the forced displacement.
By recognizing this, the aim is to include the affected people into the italian way of living. Thus, we consider Casa Corte the perfect scenario, due to its backgorund and historical characteristics presented in the next pages of this thesis, for the developement of an emergency housing project with a possibility to give them the chance to be involved into economical activities that Casa Corte provides such as farming, agriculture and the production of food goods.
Abstrakt
The thesis is based on the geomatics survey techniques performed on “Casa - Corte” a Village house particular to the municipality of Canosio.
An in-depth research is carried out on the different types of geomatics survey methods, namely UAV photogrammetry, the hand held system named Zebb Revo by GeoSlam which is based on SLAM technology, LiDAR which is a laser scanner used to convert analog information digitally and Gis, a tool that allows to analyze the territory based on geographic information.
Along with team Direct DAD Polito, we students carried out a survey to analyze Valle Maira and particularly Casa Corte. We did an extensive 3D survey on cutting-edge geomatics techniques for Casa Corte, which enabled us to produce an integrated 3D representation of the building’s current state. This survey data was later processed in the Laboratory of geomatics, Polito, and 3 different point clouds were generated, which on merging provided us with a detailed textured mesh of the house, given that it would have been impossible to generate a similar model as the house is in a state of ruins.
An additional mobile survey was carried out by us, with the help of 3D scanner application on an I-phone, which helped us study the interior spaces and merge the data with the previously generated point cloud.
History of a place is always intresting and for us the data was scarse as it has been difficult to map out the area of the Maira valley. Here, a compendium of the historical cartography consulted is suggested, showing the territory of Canosio whereever possible.
The territorial analysis necessary for the production of the design has been performed on GIS, giving us all the necessary details to keep in mind during the design phase.
To provide a conclusion on the application of the geomatics survey as mentioned in the thesis, the two main problems that are focused upon are:
1. The depopulation of the territory of Maira valley, and
2. The current scenario of war faced between Ukraine and Russia.
To address these, a common solution was to adapt Casa Corte by giving it new functions and providing the refugees a place where they can reside with safety and also blend in the community by making a livelihood out of the extra touristic and productive activities.
A study of the construction phases of casa corte helped us in understanding the architecture and redevelope it by keeping in mind the social, political and economical aspects.
