CONFLICTS OF INTEREST IN THE REGULATION OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: AN ANALYSIS BASED ON THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLEResumen
El debate sobre los organismos genéticamente modificados (en adelante OGM) y la biotecnología agrícola es crucial debido a su impacto en la seguridad alimentaria global y los desafíos éticos, económicos y ambientales. La manipulación genética permite desarrollar cultivos transgénicos que mejoran la productividad agrícola y abordan problemas nutricionales. Sin embargo, la rápida producción y comercialización de OGM carece de suficiente respaldo científico sobre los riesgos futuros, generando controversias sobre la concentración de poder en multinacionales y los posibles impactos en los ecosistemas y la salud. Este artículo examina las implicaciones legales, éticas y ambientales de las actividades de las multinacionales. A través del análisis del caso Monsanto, se enfatiza la necesidad de adoptar medidas preventivas ante la incertidumbre científica, especialmente cuando están en juego posibles daños graves o irreversibles al medio ambiente y la seguridad alimentaria.
Abstract
The debate surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and agricultural biotechnology is critical due to their implications for global food security and the associated ethical, economic, and environmental challenges. Genetic manipulation facilitates the creation of transgenic crops that can boost agricultural productivity and address nutritional deficiencies. However, the swift production and commercialization of GMOs are often accompanied by inadequate scientific evidence about potential long-term risks, leading to concerns about the concentration of power within multinational corporations and their potential effects on ecosystems and human health. This article examines the legal, ethical, and environmental dimensions of multinational corporate activities. By analyzing the Monsanto case, it underscores the necessity of implementing precautionary measures in the face of scientific uncertainty, especially when there is a risk of severe or irreversible damage to the environment and food security.
