Los jesuitas fueron expulsados tres veces del actual territorio de Colombia y regresaron al país para establecerse definitivamente en 1884, amparados, en parte, por el proyecto conservador denominado La Regeneración. Este libro explora su aporte en la educación y en las áreas sociales desde ese momento hasta nuestros días. Los jesuitas han contribuido a la formación de la sociedad colombiana en las ciencias humanas con sus colegios en Bogotá, Medellín, Pasto, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Cali y Manizales y con la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá y Cali; y al campo científico, con instituciones como el Hospital Universitario San Ignacio y el Instituto Geofísico de los Andes Colombianos. En el ámbito social, son significativas sus acciones en la fundación y organización de barrios para obreros, como el San Francisco Javier en Bogotá, y de los Círculos de Obreros de Bogotá y Cartagena. Asimismo, es de resaltar la creación de la Fundación Social, la Acción Católica y el sindicalismo católico de la Unión de Trabajadores de Colombia (UTC). Por su parte, es sobresaliente el trabajo con las misiones, especialmente la del Magdalena Medio, y la conformación de las congregaciones marianas de Medellín y Bucaramanga, las de la Buena Muerte y la Fundación Carlos González en los barrios Olaya y Quiroga de Bogotá. Con respecto a la investigación en la década de los setenta, los jesuitas son pioneros en la creación del Centro de Investigación y Educación Popular (Cinep), el Instituto Mayor Campesino de Buga, el Instituto de Ciencias Sociales en Cali y el movimiento de Fe y Alegría. En la siguiente década, aparece el Programa por la Paz, el Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados (SJR ) y el Programa de Desarrollo y Paz del Magdalena Medio. Tras el recorrido por un siglo de historia de los jesuitas en Colombia, es posible afirmar que el apostolado social es una apuesta fundamental de la Compañía de Jesús en el país, sin que ello implique la ausencia de divisiones y tensiones internas y algunas estigmatizaciones desde el interior y exterior de la Iglesia católica.
Abstract
The Jesuits were expelled three times from the current territory of Colombia and returned to the country to settle permanently in 1884, supported, in part, by the conservative project called La Regeneración. This book explores their contribution to education and social areas from that time until today. The Jesuits have contributed to the formation of Colombian society in the human sciences with their colleges in Bogotá, Medellín, Pasto, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Cali and Manizales and with the Pontifical Javeriana University of Bogotá and Cali; and to the scientific field, with institutions such as the San Ignacio University Hospital and the Geophysical Institute of the Colombian Andes. In the social sphere, their actions in the foundation and organization of neighborhoods for workers, such as San Francisco Javier in Bogotá, and the Workers' Circles of Bogotá and Cartagena, are significant. Also worth highlighting is the creation of the Social Foundation, Catholic Action and the Catholic unionism of the Union of Workers of Colombia (UTC). The work carried out with the missions, especially the Magdalena Medio mission, and the formation of the Marian congregations of Medellín and Bucaramanga, the Buena Muerte missions and the Carlos González Foundation in the Olaya and Quiroga neighbourhoods of Bogotá, are outstanding. With regard to research in the 1970s, the Jesuits were pioneers in the creation of the Centre for Popular Research and Education (Cinep), the Instituto Mayor Campesino de Buga, the Institute of Social Sciences in Cali and the Fe y Alegría movement. In the following decade, the Peace Programme, the Jesuit Refugee Service (SJR) and the Development and Peace Programme of Magdalena Medio appeared. After a century of Jesuit history in Colombia, it is possible to affirm that the social apostolate is a fundamental commitment of the Society of Jesus in the country, without this implying the absence of internal divisions and tensions and some stigmatisation from within and outside the Catholic Church.
