La traducción de obras literarias es considerada una tarea que tiene muchos retos debido a, entre otras cosas, la complejidad que implica traspasar variedades lingüísticas y cargas extralingüísticas de un idioma a otro. En distintas ocasiones, estas particularidades del texto original se matizan con el uso de la variedad estándar, lo que causa una pérdida parcial de elementos esenciales de la historia, como marcas geográficas y registros de los personajes. De acuerdo con la revisión bibliográfica que realizamos sobre estos campos de estudio, hemos identificado que se ha estudiado poco el papel de la variedad estándar y las variedades lingüísticas en traducciones literarias al español. A partir de esto, nuestro objetivo es analizar traductológicamente el uso de la variedad lingüística y estándar en los significados y significantes de las traducciones ibérica y mexicana de la obra dramatúrgica Incendies de Wajdi Mouawad. Para esto, escogimos ciertos fragmentos del libro original que tuvieran riqueza lingüística y, mediante el cotejo entre las tres versiones, analizamos las definiciones de las expresiones y palabras llamativas en cuanto a la variedad lingüística junto con su frecuencia de uso en España y México. Esto lo hicimos con ayuda de distintos diccionarios en francés, inglés y español, y del Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI. Así pues, por un lado, encontramos que, las variedades lingüísticas sí son posibles de traspasar, pero vemos que se pierden los significados de lo que está comunicando el personaje. Por el otro, distinguimos que sí se manifiesta una marca geográfica respectiva a cada país representante de las traducciones.
Abstract
Literary translation is considered a challenging task due to, among other factors, the complexity of transferring linguistic varieties and extra-linguistic features from one language to another. Frequently, the peculiarities of the original text are modified through the use of the standard variety, which causes a partial loss of the story’s essential elements, such as geographical marks and the characters’ linguistic register. According to our literary review in this field of study, we identified that there are limited studies addressing the role of the standard and linguistic varieties in literary translations into Spanish. Based on this observation, our objective is to analyze the use of linguistic and standard varieties in both the signifieds and signifiers of the Iberian and Mexican translations of Wajdi Mouawad’s dramaturgical work Incendies. To achieve this, we selected certain fragments from the original book rich in linguistic variety and, by comparing the three versions, we analyzed the definitions of notable words and expressions in terms of linguistic variety, and their frequency of use in Spain and Mexico. We used various dictionaries in French, English, and Spanish, as well as the Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI. Thus, on the one hand, we found that linguistic varieties can be transferred, but we identify that signifieds are lost amidst what the character wants to communicate. On the other hand, we distinguished distinct geographical marks specific to each country’s translation.
