English Title
Reducing economic dependence through universal basic income: an analysis of gender-focused pilot cases in the U.S.Abstract
This thesis examines the effects of basic income on economic dependency within the
framework of gender-focused Universal Basic Income (UBI) pilots in the United States.
It explores how these pilot programs facilitate economic freedom, promote autonomy,
and contribute to reducing gender inequality. The research aims to provide a detailed
understanding of the potential of UBI to address gender economic gaps, especially in
contexts where economic dependency has significantly hindered women's
empowerment.
The theoretical framework of this study is supported by an exhaustive review of
literature on basic income and economic dependency, addressing key studies by authors
such as Philippe Van Parijs and Yannick Vanderborght, who advocate UBI as a tool for
social justice. Additionally, works by Guy Standing have analyzed the effects of UBI on
economic security, and authors like Almaz Zelleke have explored its gender
implications. The methodology includes collecting first hand testimonies from
beneficiaries to capture the subjective experiences of women concerning their economic
autonomy, as well as a quantitative data analysis of the pilot beneficiaries. This
approach allows not only for observation of the impact of UBI on reducing economic
dependency but also for a precise analysis of advancements in gender equality and
economic empowerment
