This is in great part thanks to the existing regulations of universal accessibility which establish technical criteria applicable to create these spaces. Taking in account these aspects into consideration should be of the upmost importance in the planning phase of any project. With these elements we try to guarantee the accessibility and mobility of people with disabilities in emergency and safety situations, trying to ensure that users have the maximum autonomy and comfort possible. On the other hand, it is also important to understand the spatial habitability needs of these users, especially since in many cases architects ignore the fact that these people have this type of needs also in their living spaces. The encountering of this problem of spatial functionality was a recurring fact during my studies to become an architect. We as designers, in most cases, consider spaces for their visual characteristics. That's why I tried to consider the idea of what a space would be like if we didn't have this sense, sight, which is so important for human beings. How could we perceive and inhabit a space if we could not see it? In this sense, the research of the thesis will be generated by the experience of a blind person and how he perceives space. That said, I started to investigate more about blindness and made a general characterization of this population, defining the visual impairment and the different degrees of blindness that exist. Later, to better understand what the spatial experience of a blind person is like, I discovered authors such as Maria Caffarena and the blind architect Chris Downley, who has become an international reference point in the field of architecture for the disabled because through his designs he can improve the quality of life of blind people. Based on this first approach, I have begun to understand even more that the loss of any sense in one person can lead to other sensory systems increasing their own functioning. It was at this moment that I considered “multisensory” as a possible determinant concept of the project guidelines. Therefore, some reference projects have been studied taken as points of reference among numerous examples of multisensory architecture and architecture for blind people, including tactical urbanism projects. They are therefore projects where every architectural and urban element adapts to the advantage of the sensory perception of the users. Although I found several important elements that could be useful for this research, I still had to better understand the needs and requirements of users, and I had to do this through a direct approach with blind and visually impaired people, therefore, during my work practices in the city of Barcelona, Spain, in the second quarter of 2019, I had the opportunity to be in touch with the ONCE (National Organization of the Spanish Blind). This experience allowed me to be a part of different activities as a volunteer in collaboration with the Organization. This first approach to research was very useful because I had the opportunity to develop different face-to-face activities with the blind and visually impaired, interview users and experts who very kindly answered my questions. This work led me to identify the needs for individual users that in time allowed me to create the guidelines for writing the project´s requirements. Since, I had to choose a case study in order to validate these requirements (thanks to this approach with blind people) I realized that the most common needs were found most of the time in urban spaces. The latter due to the fact that here there are many architectural barriers that do not allow visually impaired people to move independently. It was for this reason that I chose a specific area of one of the most important streets in the city of Bogotá, Colombia as a case study: “Carrera Septima”. The choice of this case study is determined by the fact that Bogota is a city that does not yet have adequate pedestrian infrastructures for disabled people and is still in the process of adapting the various elements that make the city even more inclusive. Another determinant of this choice for the study was that a section of this “Carrera Septima” is located in the city center and is considered the only pedestrian street in Bogota. Subsequently, I contacted the INCI (National Institute for Blind People) in Bogota to obtain information more specifically on the case of blind people, and on the various projects that are being carried out in the city focused on this population. After obtaining the information, I began a territorial and demographic analysis of the city, specifically of the locality of “Santa Fe”, and of the neighborhood “Las Nieves” where the case study is located. After this analysis, I decided to create a design concept for a possible design for the predefined section of the “Carrera Septima”. Through direct experiences of interviews with users and experts, and the analysis of best practices, the aim of this work is to identify certain possible design guidelines through multisensory architecture and tactical urban planning, for the urban requalification of a case of study, for the predefined section of the “Carrera Septima” in Bogota. Thus trying to organize the existing activities and improve the adaptations that exist for the existing street invading commerce, transforming it into a space more suitable for everyone, and promoting spaces in the city where blind and visually impaired people can have greater autonomy and a better quality of life.spa
