Abstract
The Hernández Arcade, which was built at the end of the 19th century, and the Hernández building, which was inaugurated in 1918, were part of the desire for modernity of Bogota's newly-born bourgeoisie. These buildings were part of social practices that were increasingly tied to capitalism, and that withdrew from the colonial practices of the Santa Fe of yore. This can be remarked in their french-inspired architecture (republican and art nouveau), the professions that were practiced in the stores, and the new ways of consumption that were present in them. Thus, the arcade and the building were part of the social change that developed throughout the 19th century in a city that still conserved its colonial facade.
