Abstract
The work carried out is a diagnosis and a proposal for the conservation of a paradise with a value and incalculable potential, in a respectful way to the local culture and natural resources.
The territory in question is complex and environmentally fragile, with unique social dynamics, which is threatened by human activity without remorse. The island is overcrowded and its population divided with resentment on the part of the native communities towards the others. The measures that are taken for the improvement of the Island have to take into account these aspects.
What will happen when for some reason the resources can not reach the island?
Deaths from famine? Be left in the dark and held without communication for months because there is not enough fuel for the power plants? Thousands thirsty because drinking water can not get there? And many more uncertainties. Here appears a term that is intrinsic to the island, Continental Dependency, which suggests that without the support or help of the resources of the continental territory the island could not subsist.
To minimize this continental dependence, San Andrés has to be an economically competitive territory, preventing tourism from being the only tool. It is imperative the transformation of the island into a productive territory and in a certain self-sustainable percentage, that conserves the cultural traditions that in the past have been violated and ignored, and the population is united with a single purpose, the sustainable development of the island.
