Abstract
Bilingualism, beliefs and interpreting practices: study with a group of Spanish-English interpreters in Bogota
In Bogotá, more and more people are practicing interpreting professionally, since the international scope of Bogotá has grown in recent years. With more demand for interpreters, there are more possibilities of investigating what happens in this field. The problem is that interpreting has not been explored in depth in our country, because it is a highly unregulated field of work, nor the interpreter’s bilingualism and how it can affect the way the interpretation is carried out. Therefore, the objective of this research is to explore the relationship that exists between: the beliefs about the profession, the type of bilingualism that the interpreters have and the way they perform in real scenarios.
To understand the types of bilingualism, Weinreich theory is taken as a reference. He proposes that there are three types of bilingualism: compound, coordinated and subordinate. Additionally, the difference between acquisition or learning of an L2 is made and how it relates to the type of bilingualism. In order to obtain the necessary data for this research, professional interpreters were interviewed, and an interpretation of their authorship was analyzed. These conferences took place in a religious context (a Christian American church) and an event of the Armed Forces.
Subsequently, we proceeded to use the information collected to find results about beliefs, the type of bilingualism and their professional practice, through what was said in the interviews and an analysis of their interpretation by means of an evaluation grid designed for this dissertation. Finally, it is concluded that there are some general beliefs about the profession, as well as different visions in more particular scopes, which is related to the way how L2 was learned or acquired and the implications this has in the way the interpreting is being performed.
