The mediation of the Holy See in the conflict between Chile and Argentina for the Beagle Channel and the islands Picton Lennox and Nueva in 1978Resumen
Esta investigacion tiene como objetivo explicar la incidencia de la mediación del Papa Juan Pablo II en la resolución del conflicto entre Chile y Argentina por el Canal del Beagle en 1978. Para esto, a lo largo del texto se buscara explicar cómo la mediación del Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano resolvió amistosamente el conflicto limítrofe entre Chile y Argentina por el Canal del Beagle y las islas Picton, Lennox y Nueva en 1978. De este modo, en primer momento se realizara un análisis del contexto histórico que llevo a la mediación pontificia de 1978. Posteriormente se buscara detallar las características de la mediación que dieron pie a una solucionó pacifica al conflicto, y por ultimo se examinaran cuales fueron los efectos finales de la mediación pontificia en el conflicto por el Canal del Beagle ente Chile y Argentina.
El presente trabajo desarrollara la investigación mediante el método del process-tracing, utilizando la revision de artículos y documentos de cada gobierno, para así describir en detalle las particularidades del caso sometido a estudio. Se empleara a su vez la teoría de la Escuela Inglesa empleada por Headley Bull y Martin Wight para una mejor comprensión del caso aplicado.
Abstract
This research aims to explain the impact of the mediation of Pope John Paul II in the resolution of the conflict between Chile and Argentina by the Beagle Channel in 1978. For this, throughout the text we will seek to explain how the mediation of the State of The Vatican City friendlyly resolved the border conflict between Chile and Argentina over the Beagle Channel and the Picton, Lennox and New Islands in 1978. Thus, at first, an analysis of the historical context that led to the pontifical mediation of 1978. Subsequently, it will be sought to detail the characteristics of the mediation that gave rise to a peaceful solution to the conflict, and finally, the final effects of the pontifical mediation in the conflict over the Beagle Channel between Chile and Argentina will be examined.
The present work will develop the investigation through the process-tracing method, using the review of articles and documents of each government, in order to describe in detail the particularities of the case under study. In turn, the theory of the English School employed by Headley Bull and Martin Wight will be used for a better understanding of the case applied.
